A Presentation On Education and Globalisation (GERM)

In his presentation Paul Howard will identify the features of the GERM, describe how it is infecting our education system and explore ways of resisting it.

Schools, teachers and pupils in the UK are increasingly subjected to a neo-liberal, business model of education. Noting that this is happening in many countries, Finnish educator Pasi Sahlberg coined the term ‘Global Education Reform Movement’ (GERM) to describe the phenomenon. As with other aspects of globalisation, pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are the most likely to miss out from the GERM’s core elements: marketization, competition and privatisation.

Date: 22nd February.

Time: 6.45 p.m. for 7.00 p.m. until 9.00 p.m.

Place:  Christ Church, Seaside, BN22 3RR.
